Cubbing is the term used to describe the illegal hunting and killing of fox cubs priory to the main hunt season commencing. Occurring in the Autumn period; leading to being known as Autumn Hunting,
Why are fox cubs killed?
The hunts take new (young) hounds to be prepared for the hunting season:

- Teaching them to hunt in more confined areas to prepare for the full day hunting
- Teaching them how to kill a fox
- Disbanding fox family units with a view to making for easier kills of isolated foxes in the main hunt season
How does it differ from the main hunt?
Unlike the main hunt season, cubbing is generally done over a very small area with riders often in stationary positions around smaller wooded areas so that the new hounds can hone their hunting skills. key signs of a cubbing meet can be:

- Riders positioned around a wooded area facing into the wood
- Support (on foot) in similar positions or entering the wood, often with long sticks (used to flush out a fox into the path of the hounds)
- Riders participating in cubbing will wear tweed
- The hunt out at dawn and dusk as this is prime time to see cubs out
